May 20th, 2010: B Love Spring Update

Hello all you B lovelies!!

WOW – it’s been a little while since I last wrote – however there has been an abundance of events and happenings here at the Green Cottage keeping Peter and I busily evolving the space and our lives 🙂

Since my last update Peter and the cottage were filmed in a silent short film for the Earth Day Canada Hometown Heroes Competition. The film was an official selection – which means it will be played in various malls and the TTC stations etc. Check it out at:

The Cottage has also received an incredible face-lift!! Solar electric panels are now installed on the roof alongside the solar hot water (they are so pretty together 🙂 ) The backyard is being transformed daily with 7 new raised beds and utilizing a planting method known as square foot gardening to maximize production plus 9 yards of fresh soil equals a lot of dirt and a lot of excitement. The kitchen has been adorned with a living wall and we are feeding our pet worms daily in our new vermi-composter (using the compost tea to feed our little seedlings in our growing garden).

We participated in the Hamilton Door’s Open event on May 1st and 2nd and were able to welcome close to 500 guests into our space. It was really awesome to be able to participate in this event – sharing what I consider to be a space that I am blessed to be in with so many others. We had a variety of people come through here including a few pro photographers here is a photo taken during the event (the kitchen in full swing as I had some jobs to finish).

Some personal gratitude moments:

I was both surprised and delighted to be featured in an article in the most recent distribution of Hamilton Magazine (page 17 – 20).  It was a lovely article (only a couple of inaccuracies) and I feel very blessed to know that Hamilton has been receiving B Love so lovingly 😉

I also was blessed to be able to spend last week volunteering in Toronto for a Chopra event called Journey into Healing. I’ve attended this course before though being able to volunteer and see what’s required behind the scenes as well as get a refresher of some really amazing information was incredible. Commuting to TO was a brand new experience for me – and I have to say it’s not something I think I would be able to get used to.

De La Sol kicked off their Treading Lightly Series with You Are What You Eat last Saturday evening! A great success and B Love was there to cater and enjoy in the celebration of sharing knowledge and participating in helping others learn to get connected with their food and where it comes from! Special thanks to Megan De Marco and Andre Grandbois for organizing this event, to Pat Holland and Peter Ormond for your gracious hands and hearts in helping to prepare, transport, serve and clean up before, during and after this event!! Couldn’t have done it with out you – Big Thank you!

Okay and NOW the news you’ve all been waiting for…..

As some of you know I’ve struggled with the model I was using last year of the B Love Shares. The main reason for this: Packaging!! I’ve never wanted to create added waste and although there are alternative packaging materials out there … they still take energy to be produced and in many cases involve clear cutting and mono cropping in order to be produced. So what to do?? Here is what I’d like to try to experiment with:
